The opportunity I will discuss presently is the effect of age on the range of TSH values that are considered normal (reference range). It has been well documented in large studies that our TSH level increases as we age. This shift to higher TSH values is illustrated in the graph shown below.
This is a perfect opportunity for medical laboratories to redefine the TSH "normal" (reference) range to give precise information to testing doctors so that patients can be appropriately advised.
